short Response to Enlighten Sexism

“A new girliness – girl power in a mini-skirt and pink boa – beckoned to the girls and women of America as a rediscovered pleasure and acceptable persona.” I think one of Susan Douglas’s main points in chapter 4 is that women are craving the things that feminist having been trying to escape. Women today really want a man and kids. The show Ally McBeal had an actual scene where Ally hallucinated a baby in her apartment. And a reoccurring theme in every female dominated show is that they don’t feel complete with out a man. Now I understand how feminist don’t like this because that women to be independent, but I don’t understand what’s wrong with craving a man in your life. If you look at happy married coupled how could you not want that. And I think men want it just as much as women they just hide it better. Everyone craves a romantic love relationship. Douglas is also very critical of all these shows. I don’t think the point of these shows is to show antifeminist views, I think their just trying to create a show that women will relate to. If they play a show with a perfect women with no insecurities or no problems people are going to think it is stupid.

Susan Douglas description of black women in the media I think is very accurate. She is right when she talks about how everyone loves Oprah, Dr. Bailey, Queen Latifah, and Wanda Sykes because their strong women with a lot of sass. Black and white women both love that. We envy what they are able to do. Who wouldn’t love to tell off a there Boss for being a jerk? But for all these characters there are also some pretty unappealing versions of black women in media such as women in rap videos, Martin’s TV show, etc. And the truth is that black women in real life really do face more struggle than any other person in America.
